Hygiene and Diet Tips for a Healthy Mouth

  • Bring child for first dental visit by 1 year of age
  • Avoid allowing baby to go to sleep with a bottle filled with milk or juice
  • Decrease night-time breast feeding once baby’s teeth develop
  • Before teeth develop, clean the mouth with damp cloth
  • Once teeth appear, use soft bristled toothbrush with toothpaste to clean teeth

  • Limit frequent snacking on sugary food such as candy, cake, and even crackers and pretzels
  • Avoid giving child soda and juice, stick with regular milk and water
  • Make sure children spend 2 minutes brushing
  • At night, after brushing, go right to bed (no snacks
  • along the way)
  • Parents, continue helping child brush and floss their teeth until they reach 8 years of age
  • See your dentist for regular visits (every 6 months)
